FIRST INNINGS - BEYOND BASIC BATTING
INTRODUCTION They will address four areas - Back Foot Defensive Shots, Back Foot Offensive strokeplay, Front Foot Defensive shots and Front Foot Offensive strokeplay. |
GRIP - The grip is the same as Basic Batting. For right-handed batsmen, place the right hand below the left hand in the middle of the handle. The flat part of the bat faces the bowler. For left-handed batsmen, place the left hand below the right hand in the middle of the handle. The flat part of the bat faces the bowler. - Make two V’s with the hands (thumb and index finger). These V’s should point toward the outside edge of the bat. - The correct grip makes it possible to have a smooth swing and provides power and control. |
SET UP - The set up is the same as for Basic Batting. Position the feet so that they are shoulder width apart, with the toes lining up with middle stump. - Bend knees slightly, so that the weight of the body is on the balls of the feet. - Ensure that the hands are kept close to the body, resting on the inside of the front thigh. - Eyes should be both level and over the hands. |
BACK FOOT DEFENSIVE - SKILL EXECUTION - The swing can be broken into three parts: Step, Stop, Swing - Move feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat simultaneously. Dip shoulder at the line of the intended target. All leg movements should be completed before beginning the downswing. The front knee should bend to provide a balanced platform. - Once you have a balanced stationary position, commence the swing by unfolding the shoulders, arms, hands, and bat, through the line of the ball. |
BACK FOOT DEFENSIVE - HEAD TO THE LINE - There are two progressions for this activity; throws on the full and the bounce. - With partners approximately 5 metres apart, throw the ball on the full/bounce back and forth, at approximately waist height. - Step back and across to the line of the ball, and catch the ball below the eyes on the full remaining in a side-on position. - The position of the eyes should be over the hands as the catch is taken with emphasis on watching the ball all the way into the hands. |
BACK FOOT DEFENSIVE - TOP HAND ONLY - There are two progressions for this activity; a paddle bat and a small plastic cricket (Kanga) bat. The ball is delivered with an overarm throw to ensure it reaches the batter at approximately waist height, on the bounce. - Move your feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time using only top hand of the batting grip. - Dip shoulder at the line of the intended target. |
BACK FOOT DEFENSIVE - KEEP IT CLOSE - There are two progressions for this activity; overarm throws on the full and the bounce. The ball is delivered with an overarm throw to ensure it reaches the batter on the full/bounce at approximately waist height. - Move the feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time. - Dip shoulder at the line of the intended target. - Swing the bat (by unfolding the shoulders, arms, hands, and bat) towards the target, with the front elbow high at point of contact, hitting the ball softly into the ground. The follow through of the bat swing is limited for defensive batting. |
BACK FOOT OFFENSIVE - TARGET TEE DRIVE - Place the ball on the tee and place a marker approximately five metres away, as a target. - Move the feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time. - Dip shoulder at the line of the intended target. - Swing the bat by unfolding the shoulders, arms, hands, and bat towards the target, with the front elbow high at point of contact. |
BACK FOOT OFFENSIVE - TARGET DROP AND DRIVE - Drop the ball from approximately shoulder height and far enough away from the batter to allow a comfortable step back. Place a marker approximately five metres away, as a target. - Move the feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time. - Dip shoulder at the line of the intended target. - Swing the bat by unfolding the shoulders, arms, hands, and bat towards the target, with the front elbow high at point of contact. |
BACK FOOT OFFENSIVE - TARGET TEE PULL (Lesson Plan) - Place the ball on the tee and place a marker approximately five metres away, as a target. -Move the feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time. -Take hands high in preparation, and make a full swing of the bat from high to low. -Follow through naturally. |
BACK FOOT OFFENSIVE - TARGET OVERARM AND DRIVE - There are two progressions for this activity; overarm throws on the full and the bounce. The ball is delivered with an overarm throw to ensure it reaches the batter on the full/bounce at approximately waist height. - Move the feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time. - Dip shoulder at the line of the intended target. - Swing the bat by unfolding the shoulders, arms, hands, and bat towards the target, with the front elbow high at point of contact. |

FRONT FOOT DEFENSIVE - HEAD TO THE LINE - There are two progressions for this activity; underarm throws on the full and the bounce. With partners approximately 5 metres apart, underarm the ball on the full/bounce back and forth, at approximately knee height. - Step forward to the line of the ball, and catch the ball alongside the front knee. - The front knee should bend to provide a balanced platform. - The position of the eyes should be over the hands as the catch is taken with emphasis on watching the ball all the way into the hands. |
FRONT FOOT DEFENSIVE - TOP HAND ONLY - There are two progressions for this activity; a paddle bat and a small plastic cricket (Kanga) bat. The ball is delivered with an underarm throw to ensure it reaches the batter at approximately shin height, on the bounce. - Move your feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time using only top hand of the batting grip. - The front knee should bend to provide a balanced platform. - Swing the bat by unfolding the shoulders, arms, hands, and bat towards the target, hitting the ball softly into the ground.
