Basic Bowling

INTRODUCTION

This introduction to basic bowling by 2006-07 Bulls Player of the Year Ashley Noffke and former Queensland off-spinner Nathan Hauritz provides the basics for the young cricketing start out in the game.

THE GRIP

- The first step to bowling is having a good grip. Place the thumb underneath the ball and two fingers (index and middle finger) along the seam.

- Rest the ball comfortably in the hand, not too far back, not too far forward. The ball rests in the fingers so that a small window can be seen between the fingers and the ball.

- The correct grip provides good control of the ball.

POSITIONING YOUR BODY

- Position the feet so that they are shoulder width apart, with the front foot pointing toward the target.

- Stretch the non-bowling arm above head height, in line with the target, and bring the bowling hand up beside the chin.

SKILL EXECUTION

- Pull the non-bowling elbow down to the leading hip.

- With the bowling elbow moving down and backwards, trace a circle with the ball. This pattern allows the arm to straighten naturally as it extends around to a high release point.

- Follow through towards the target as the ball is released.

- The delivery needs to be practised repeatedly so that it becomes automatic. When the delivery has been mastered, an approach to the crease can be added to build momentum.

PRACTISING - PARTNER BOWLING (Lesson Plan)

- Two people stand 8-10 metres apart, bowling back and forth, with the ball projected into the pitch.

- Start the delivery from a balance position.

- Follow the above Skill Execution points.

PRACTISING - TARGET LENGTH BOWLING (Lesson Plan)

- Bowl towards the lines/markers/cones that are set out as target zones on the pitch. This activity will help develop control and consistency.

- Start the delivery from a balance position.

- Follow the Skill Execution points.

PRACTISING - TARGET LENGTH BOWLING WITH MARKERS (Lesson Plan)

- Bowl towards the lines/markers/cones that are set out as target zones on the pitch, representing full, ideal, and short deliveries.

- Start the delivery from a balanced position.

- Follow the Skill Execution points.
