FIRST INNINGS - BASIC BATTING

INTRODUCTION
Queensland Bulls stars Jimmy Maher, James Hopes and Brendan Nash provide a solid introduction to basic batting skills.

GRIP
- The first step to good batting is using the correct grip. Start with the flat side of the  bat facing the oncoming ball. Place both hands together in the middle of the handle.
- If you’re a right handed batter your right hand should be below your left.  Left handed  batters will place their left hand below the right. Adjust the grip so that the “V” formed  by the thumb and forefingers of each hand line up with each other.
- The “V” of both hands should line up with the edge of the bat. This grip allows you to lift the bat and swing through the ball with maximum power and control.

 SET UP
- Position the feet so that they are shoulder width apart, with the toes lining up with middle stump.
- Bend the knee slightly so that the weight on the body is on the balls of the feet.
- Ensure that the hands are kept close to the body, resting on the inside of the front thigh.
- Eyes should be both level and over the hands

 EXECUTING THE SKILL
- The swing can be broken into three parts – step…stop…swing.
- Move feet to the line of the ball and and pick up the bat simultaneously. - Dip shoulder at the line of the intended target.
- All leg movement should be completed before beginning the swing. - The front knee should be bent to provide a balanced platform.
- From this balanced, stationary position begin the swing by unfolding the shoulders, arms, hands and bat through the line of the ball.

PRACTISING - TEE BATTING (Lesson Plan)
- Place the ball on the tee for front and back foot shots
- Move the feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time. Dip shoulder at the line of intended target.
- With front foot shots, the front knee should bend to provide a balanced platform
- Swing the bat (by unfolding the shoulders, arms, hands and bat) towards the target.

PRACTISING - DROP AND DRIVE (Lesson Plan)
 Front Foot

- Drop the ball from approximately waist high and far enough away from the batter to allow a comfortable step forward. - Move the feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time. – The front knee should bend to provide a balanced platform. Swing the bat towards the target.

Back foot:

- Drop the ball from approximately shoulder height and far enough away from the batter to allow a comfortable step back. - Move the feet to the line of the ball and pick up the bat at the same time. - Make a full bat swing with the front elbow high at the point of contact.

PRACTISING - UNDERARM AND DRIVE (Lesson Plan)
There are three progressions for this activity – a rolled underarm ball, an underarm half-volley, and an underarm full toss.
- Bowler rolls the ball underarm along the ground towards the batter. The batter moves their feet to the line of the ball and picks up the bat at the same time.
- The front knee should bend to provide a balanced platform.
- Swing the bat towards the target.
