PHILIPSON HITS SECOND TON THIS WEEK

Saturday 6 February 2010

In-form XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls batsman Craig Philipson’s second century this week has put University of Queensland on target for a timely outright win tomorrow against Valley in the XXXX GOLD First Grade premiership.

After University’s pace attack had swept aside an under strength Valley for just 66, Philipson (109) and the consistent Jarrod Turner (70) combined to lift the Students to 6-264 declared.

Philipson, who scored his maiden Ford Ranger Cup ton on Wednesday night for the Bulls in their narrow loss to NSW at the SCG, shared in partnerships of 99 with Graeme Skennar (27) and 64 with Turner at the WEP Harris Oval.

English import Maurice Chambers produced some eye-catching work with the new ball for University, with the West Indian born fast bowler taking 2-21 from nine overs in the first innings and then breaking through again in the Valley second innings to have 1-6.

Chambers, who has played first class cricket for Essex, with the St Lucia club for the second half of the season.

Reliable left-arm paceman Paul Burman took 3-13 from six overs while Joe Holliday nabbed 3-16 from eight overs as the Uni pace trio proved too good for Valley.

Gold Coast leg-spinner Daniel Doran has shown he won’t take his omission from the Bulls line-up lightly, delivering an exceptional spell of 3-19 from 10 overs for the defending premiers as they bowled out Sandgate-Redcliffe for 145 at Deagon.

With the selectors preferring young Toombul leggie Cameron Boyce for the recent away matches against NSW and Tasmania, Doran made sure he did not miss an opportunity to impress.

He was well backed by pacemen Mick Durbridge (3-30) and Chris Slattery (2-20), with only Ian Gallagher (43) and Nathan Rimmington (22) providing solid resistance.

The Gators though bit back late in the day to have the Dolphins 2-14, with Adam Mabb making the new ball breakthrough.

A strong fightback by Wynnum-Manly’s middle and lower order has put them in a strong position against South Brisbane at Norman Gray Oval.

The Sea Eagles were staring down the barrel at 6-153 before defiant knocks from Luke Waters (74), evergreen Ryan Poole (59), Australian Under-19 allrounder Jason Flors (47) and the consistent Jesse Seven, whose innings of 40 took him past 600 runs for the season.

Souths were 1-36 at stumps with Dan Wilson (30no) holding the key for their run chase tomorrow.

Wests were unable to repeat their run-scoring feats of last week when the met competition leaders Toombul yesterday, restricted to 153 after being in deep trouble at 6-39 at Ken Mackay Oval.

Opener Pat Collins followed on his knock of 96 last week with a gutsy 79 not out as he carried his bat, sharing in a ninth wicket stand of 55 with young quick Cameron Gannon (25).

Veteran left-arm paceman Jason Voros was the Toombul spearhead, taking 4-32 from 21 overs while the off-spin of Chris Sabburg netted the youngster 3-33 from eight overs.

Toombul had galloped to 1-103 at stumps, with the form surge of Kieran Murphy continuing as he finished the day 59 not out.

Redlands pace bowler Nathan Collins made it consecutive milestones, with the swing bowler following on from his maiden hat-trick last week in the match against Sandgate-Redcliffe to hit his highest first grade score today.

Collins' fighting effort of 68 was matched by Tigers allrounder Ryan Le Loux who top-scored with 72 as Redlands made 250 against the Sunshine Coast at Maroochydore.

Another sparkling innings by Norths captain Andy Michael has put the Vikings in a competitive position against Beenleigh/Logan at Ian Healy Oval.

Michael top-scored with a well-struck 89 featuring 11 fours and a six, as the home side powered to 296 against the Cutters.

Michael was well backed by Zac Pacey (58) and rookie Elliott Gregg, who finished 58 not out.

Beenleigh paceman Craig Rosario moved into second spot on the leading wicket-takers list with his haul of 4-67 lifting the veteran to 38 wickets behind Redlands paceman Matt Turich (43).

The Cutters will resume at 1-40 when the round concludes tomorrow.
