Board Members

Jim Holding - Chairman

A partner with the legal firm DLA Piper, Jim joined the Board of Directors for the first time in 2006. After a long playing career, he was involved in the administration at Toombul and joined the Grade committee in the early 1990s, before his work as a lawyer took him to Canberra and Sydney for four years. He rekindled the association with Toombul and Grade Committees on his return and has been a member of the Conducts/Player Behaviour Committee, and the Racial and Religious Vilification Committee since 2001. He commenced playing cricket for Toombul at Under-10 level and continued with the club up to Second Grade where he was part of a premiership team in 1989-90, two seasons after being successful with the Third Grade side. Always energetic and passionate about his cricket, the then 42-year-old was elected chairman at a special board meeting on 9 November 2010 following the tragic death of predecessor Damien Mullins.

 

Sal Vasta - Deputy Chairman 

Sal was elected to the Board at an ordinary meeting on 22 February 2011, filling the position left vacant by Jim Holding following his elevation to the chairmanship. Sal was elected deputy chairman when Bryan Phelan opted to remain a CA Director at the August 2011 AGM. He has been a passionate contributor to the game since joining South Brisbane as a committee member in 2000, becoming secretary in 2002 and president in 2006 through until 2011. He was a QC delegate from 2002 to 2011, and has been a member of the QC Racial and Religious Vilification Committee since 2004, Conducts Committee since 2005, and Grade committee since 2008. He was held in such high regard that he was invited to be part of the QC sub-committee into proposed changes to the Memorandum and Articles of Association, whose far-reaching recommendations were ultimately accepted in early 2011. As a player, Sal spent one year with University of Queensland as a teenager while he was studying there. He has played summer and winter cricket for South Brisbane Grade and Sub-Districts teams since 1998, being part of the club's 6th Grade premiership team in 2007-08. Sal has been a Crown Prosecutor since 1993.

 

Allan Border AO

Australia's most capped Test captain and No.2 on the all-time list of Test match appearances with 156, Allan joined the Board following the death of Peter Burge in October 2001. A legend of the game, he scored 11,174 Test runs and had a Test average of 50.56. He captained Australia in 93 Test matches and was a member of the first Queensland team to win the Sheffield Shield in 1994-95. Allan was a Test selector between 1998 and 2005 and coached Australia 'A' on more than 30 occasions. The Allan Border Medal, awarded to the best Australian player each year, was named in his honour, as was the main playing field at Queensland Cricket Headquarters. Also a long-time member of the Australian selection panel, Allan was a Cricket Australia Board representative until 2009, serving on the Playing Conditions Committee as well as being Australia's representative on the ICC's Cricket Committee - Playing. He received Life Membership of QC in August 2010.

Tom Frankling

Tom Frankling was appointed to the Board in November 2011. The youngest Director at just 34, he brings great energy, enthusiasm and intellect. The Head of Middle School at William Ross State High School in Townsville, Frankling is currently studying for his Masters of Education in Leadership in Management. He has been coaching and managing junior teams for more than a decade and been an outstanding cricketer himself over the same period. He managed the North Queensland Schoolboys team from 2002-2011 and coached the Queensland Schoolboys team from 2004-2010. Frankling represented Queensland Country at the national championships from 2008 to 2011 and was selected in the Australian Country team in January 2011. Frankling and Sean Fitzsimmons hold the record for the biggest fifth wicket partnership in Country Championships history with a stand of 280 in 2010.

 
 

Barry Jansen

Barry has been the driving force behind cricket in Mackay for more than three decades. He is a foundation member of the Northern Suburbs CC in Mackay, where he spent 1976 to 1995 as either president or vice-president. Barry spent two years as Mackay Junior Cricket president before stepping into the presidency of Mackay Cricket from 1986 until his QC election in August 2011. He has been chairman of the Harrup Park Country Club since 1998. The North Queensland Cricket president from 2004 and Queensland Country vice-president for the same period, he is a Life Member of Norths Mackay, Mackay Cricket, North Queensland Cricket and Queensland Country Cricket. One of his finest achievements was been overseeing the development of Harrup Park from a dance hall into a 200 poker machine facility with outstanding sporting fields. Barry was a well-respected member of the local business community having spent 31 years with Mackay Sugar Limited, the last 10 in senior management, before running a motel in Airlie Beach. He is also Director of Clubs Queensland.

 

Gary Madsen OAM

Awarded Life Membership of Queensland Cricket in 2002-03, Gary began his cricket administration career in 1972, joining the Management Committee of the Ipswich/West Moreton Cricket Association. He became an Executive Member of the Queensland Cricket Association in 1989, becoming the Country Board Member in 1991 as well as President of the Queensland Country Cricket Association. He joined the current Board in 1991-92. Gary was appointed to the ACB's Game Development committee in 2001. Prior to his retirement, he was a Construction Supervisor, controlling projects in the Brisbane area for the Queensland Government's Administrative Services Department, Q-Build.

 

Kerren Smith

Kerren initially spent five years on the Board after first being elected in 2002-03. He stepped aside for 12 months but was re-elected as soon as he put his name forward again in August 2010. Kerren enjoyed a lengthy involvement with junior cricket at the grass roots level. In addition to coaching, he was President of Gympie Junior Cricket (1991-96) and Wide Bay Junior Cricket (1997-2002) and was awarded Life Membership of both bodies. Kerren was President of Queensland Junior Cricket from 1999 to 2007. He was also on the management committee of the Gympie Cricket Association from 1998- to 2000. The managing director of heavy machinery manufacturers J Smith and Sons since 1993, he is also a Director of the Cooloola Regional Development Board.
